Stan Vogelsang, President (2017-2019)
Stan is a 20+ year member of Old Mission Rotary, where he served as club president in 1998/99. He was an Assistant Governor from 1999-2001. He currently serves as Club Executive Secretary. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Bequest Society. He has worked in many Rotary projects including: RYLA, Project Mercy, VIIDAI, and Thousand Smiles. He served as Board Chair for three years fof the Copley Family YMCA where he was a a board member for 11 years. Stan retired in 2008 after 37 years with Washington Inventory Service. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force with a one year tour in Viet Nam. He and his wife Julie have one son and two grandchildren.
Dr. David Irwin, Immediate Past President (2013-2017)
Dave has worked in the dental clinic at 1000 Smiles since 2002. He was recruited by Dr. Jim Vernetti, one of the early members of 1000 Smiles, and a mentor of Dave’s at the Richard Tucker Study Club in San Diego. Dave is a member of the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary.
Kim Muslusky, Secretary
Kim was a charter member of the San Diego North Rotary Club in 1993. She was the club president in 1998-99. She served as Rotary 5340 district secretary for three years, 2003-2005. She joined the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary in 2014. She is the Interact Club advisor at Mt. Carmel High School. She is a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Bequest Society. She has been active in Thousand Smiles since 1995 and was President in 2005-2007 and again in 2009-2011 Kim has her own graphic arts business, and donates her time and talent to TSF and the Rotary district. She and her husband Dennis have 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
Robert L. Chalfa, Treasurer
Bob, one of the founders of TS, served the Thousand Smiles Foundation as it’s second president in 1987-1989 and has been an active Rotarian since January 1975. Bob and his wife Gloria have been volunteers at the clinics for 32 years. Bob is presently a member of the Old Mission Rotary Club in San Diego. During Thousand Smiles Clinics, Bob, a fluent Spanish speaker, serves as inventory manager and logistics person. Bob and Gloria are the owners of a heavy construction equipment sales company.
Hugh Kramer, Director
Hugh has been a member of Old Mission Rotary since 1985, and was the charter president of the past Shelter Island Rotary Club. He has chaired various Rotary committees, including International Services. Both he and his wife Carol are Paul Harris Fellows. After a teaching career, he served as VP of the American Lung Association and VP at Mercy Hospital as co-founder of the Mercy Hospital Foundation. He and his wife founded and have owned the Discover Baja Travel Club for the past twenty years. They have served as volunteers for the Thousand Smiles clinics since 2008.
Syd Logan, Director
Syd joined Thousand Smiles in 1995 as a volunteer assisting with patient registration. In 2003, he developed a Internet-based patient and volunteer tracking system for the organization, which has been in use ever since. He is currently in the process of redesigning this system, and acts as an adviser to the foundation on issues related to technology, particularly in areas related to digital patient records and volunteer registration. Syd holds two degrees in Computer Science and has been on the engineering staff of several notable technology companies, including Netscape, AOL, VMware, and Broadcom. He has penned three books on various technology-related subjects, published by Prentice Hall and Addison Wesley.
Mark McAnelly, Director
Mark, a Paul Harris Society Member, is the past President of the National City Rotary Club and present member of the Old Mission Rotary Club. He has been an active member of Thousand Smiles Foundation since 1989, serving as President in 2007-2009, assisting in facility construction and maintenance, logistics, public relations, Go-Fer and evening entertainment organizer. Mark has a successful landscape / lighting contracting business which allows him to take time off to assist at the Thousand Smiles and NorCal Clinics throughout the year.
Michael Nussbaum, MD., Director
Mike was born in Houston, Texas. He is married to Mariana Y. Nussbaum, MD. They have four children: Matthew, David, Claire and Adam. Mike received his degree as an M.D. at the USC School of Medicine, Residency Internal Medicine UCLA , ABIM 1989, Residency Anesthesiology UCI, ABA 1993, Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Texas Heart Institute, 1991, Private Practice Anesthesiology in San Diego since 1992, Chairman Department of Anesthesia Palomar Medical Center 1996-1998, Clinical Attending Staff UCSD. Volunteering with the Thousand Smiles Foundation since 2009.
Alberto Romero Gracia, DDS, Director
Alberto was invited to work for TSF in 1989 as an interpreter and dental assistant, while he was a student at the UABC Dental School in Tijuana, Mexico. He has worked in Mexicali and Ensenada for the foundation for many years and also volunteered with Flying Samaritans for many years. He is now a dentist and prosthodontist living in Tecate. He still works at the TSF clinics because he dedicated to the program and enjoys helping needy children. He is the owner and practicing dentist of Dental Tecate. Alberto is married to Mayte Valenzuela, they have 3 children and 1 grandchild.
Lydia Stewart, RN, Director
Lydia is a member of the Old Mission Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and recipient of her former club’s Rotarian of the Year Award. She is a Past President and Board Member of the San Diego National Association of Hispanic Nurses, a Board Member of the US/Mexico Sister Cities of San Diego / Leon, GTO, Mexico. She is a retired nurse who worked at UCSD.
Dee Thomas, Director
Dee Thomas is 2015-16 President of Lake Elsinore Rotary Club, she is also very active in District 5330 projects, and with her late husband, Tom, has been a volunteer at Thousand Smiles. for several years. Tom was an active Thousand Smiles Board Member until his unexpected passing this year. Dee graciously took over his spot on the board.
Ron Vernetti, Director
Ron is a 20-year member of Coronado Rotary and currently serves as Foundation Chair. He is a Major Donor Level 2 and is a member of the Paul Harris Society and the Bequest Society. Ron also is a five-year member of the Board of Directors of St. Vincent de Paul. A retired high school teacher of U.S. History and government, Ron is married with 3 children and 2 grandchildren.
